Great article! It captures something I think many teachers feel but struggle to articulate.

Explicit teaching absolutely has its place, especially when building foundational skills like reading. But as you argue, when it becomes the dominant mode we risk losing the richness of learning, the relevance, connection, and metacognition that deepen understanding.

Real learning happens when explicit skill building is paired with opportunities for students to think, question, and make meaning.
